18 North is a small travel company for people who like the Caribbean best when nothing is on the schedule. We plan the stay, find the quiet beaches, book the right tables, and keep a sailboat close by in case an afternoon calls for it.
Beaches without the crowd. Reef a few kicks from shore. A kayak when you feel like moving and a lounger when you don't.
Water clear enough to count the fish from a paddleboard. Swim out, float, and let the afternoon go.
Dinner on a terrace above the water, then the sky does its thing. The French side takes its cooking seriously and the Dutch side keeps the music going late.
One small island, two countries: French Saint-Martin to the north and Dutch Sint Maarten to the south. There's no border post in between, so you can have breakfast in one and dinner in the other.
s/v Pantas is our sailboat, and she comes with the stay. Take her out for an afternoon of snorkel stops and a swim off the stern, or leave her at anchor and admire her from the beach.

In the northeastern Caribbean, east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Anguilla and St. Barth are a short ferry ride away.
Fly into Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on the Dutch side. Many US cities fly direct.
Yes. US, Canadian and European visitors need a valid passport and a return or onward ticket. No visa is needed for a vacation stay.
Both. There's no border check between them and the drive across takes about half an hour. A good rule: dinner on the French side, music on the Dutch side.
The French side uses euros and European plugs. The Dutch side prices things in US dollars and uses US-style plugs. Dollars and cards are accepted almost everywhere, so an adapter matters more than currency.
Everywhere. You'll also hear French, Dutch, Spanish and Papiamento.
December through April is dry, sunny and busiest. May through November is quieter and greener, and falls within the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30), so we plan those dates with care.
